Reproduction and life cycle
Egyptian vultures are usually monogamous, forming strong pair bonds that can last for many years. They prefer to nest in sheltered places, most often on rocky ledges, in cliff faces, small caves, or even suitable parts of abandoned buildings.
Both sexes are involved in the construction of the Nest, which is a rather untidy but strong structure made of sticks and lined with a variety of torn materials, including rags, fur and animal skin. Such nests are often reused for many years in a row.
The female usually lays from one to three eggs, which are incubated by both parents for about 42 days. A remarkable reproductive adaptation is their ability to lay a replacement clutch if the first clutch of eggs is destroyed or taken before hatching, which indicates a strong motivation for reproduction.
As soon as the chicks hatch, they become altricial, which means they are helpless and require intensive parental care. They are covered in sparse down and are fed by both parents.
The stage when the young bird
The stage when the young bird is ready to fly, occurs after about three months. However, Young Eagles do not reach their full adult plumage until they are about five years old, which indicates a long period of growth before reaching full maturity and reproductive ability.
Conservation status and threats
Despite their adaptability, Egyptian vultures face significant conservation challenges across their global range. The species is currently listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of endangered species, indicating a high risk of extinction in the wild.
The main threats
The main threats include habitat loss and degradation, mainly due to agricultural expansion, urbanization and infrastructure development. The reduced availability of carrion, which is often the result of improved sanitation practices and a decrease in the numbers of wild ungulates, also affects their food supply.
Poisoning is a particularly destructive threat, both intentionally targeting predators and secondary poisoning from the consumption of carcasses treated with veterinary drugs, such as Diclofenac, which decimated vulture populations in Asia. Electrocution from power lines and collisions with wind turbines are also growing concerns.
